WebWarper / Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.) / Usage of WebWarper

The sites themselves support gzip - why do I need WebWarper?

The abovementioned opinion on gzip support is an exaggeration. Really, almost all large portals, including Yahoo! or Google, support gzip, transmitting pages in the compressed form. But for the majority of other sites it is not true. On one hand, use of compression requires certain expertise and effort on behalf of the site developer (or hosting provider). On the other hand, pager compression increase server load, which can be considered undesirable. But the usual reason is that site developers do not consider this possibility at all.

Try any Google search term, say "Literature". Open in a random way several sites you find. Use our measurement utility, to check, whether these sites support gzip. (When viewing sites through WebWarper, it is possible to call it using the "Measure traffic" link in the upper panel of WebWarper.) If the site supports gzip, the "Direct loading" section will contain "Content-Encoding: gzip", and the "SAVING RATIO" will be close to 1.

WebWarper also supports the special "super-dense" mode that allows getting additional economy even for the sites that support gzip. For example, you can measure gain when applying this mode to Yahoo!
